NGK glow plugs provide heat for diesel-engine cold starts. The heater element is sealed in a metal sheath, or in a ceramic sheath on fast-heating types. The glow plug reaches well over 800 degrees C within seconds of the ignition being switched on. A quick, even glow improves cold-weather starting and reduces white smoke and rattling during the first minutes of running. On later engines, post-heating supports clean combustion while the engine warms through.
