NGK glow plugs provide heat for cold starting. The heater element is sealed inside a metal sheath, or a ceramic sheath on fast-heating types, and reaches well over 800°C within seconds of the ignition being switched on. A quick, even glow improves starting in cold weather and reduces white smoke and rattle during the first minutes of running. On later engines, post-heating supports combustion while the engine warms through.
