The heater element is sealed inside a metal sheath, or a ceramic sheath on fast-heating types, and reaches well over 800°C within seconds of the ignition being switched on. A quick, even glow improves cold-weather starting, reduces white smoke and rattle in the first minutes of running, and supports post-heating on later engines while they warm through.
