Glow plugs provide heat for a diesel engine's cold start. The heater element is sealed inside a metal sheath, or a ceramic sheath on fast-heating types. The element reaches well over 800°C within seconds after the ignition is switched on.
A quick, even glow improves cold-weather starting and reduces white smoke and rattle during the first minutes of running. On later engines, glow plugs also support the post-heating phase while the engine warms through.
